A look at dexpanthenol: uses and benefits

If you’ve stumbled across the term ‘dexpanthenol’ while looking for a cream that helps keep babies’ skin protected from the causes of nappy rash, you may be wondering exactly what it is. Don’t worry – we’re here to help!

Here we explain why dexpanthenol is used in skincare products like these, while also highlighting some of the key benefits it can offer when looking after delicate skin.

What is dexpanthenol?

Dexpanthenol is a derivative of pantothenic acid (also known as vitamin B5).

Thanks to its ability to easily penetrate the skin, dexpanthenol has long been used in the cosmetic industry in creams, ointments, lotions and haircare products.

While one of its most well-known uses is in nappy creams, it’s also commonly added to various other skincare products due to its ability to help the natural recovery of skin.

In fact, you’ll never guess which skincare brand was the first to produce a product containing dexpanthenol. That’s right – it was Bepanthen, back in 1947!

What’s the difference between dexpanthenol and panthenol?

While dexpanthenol and panthenol are often used interchangeably, they’re not exactly the same.

Panthenol is a general term used to describe both L-panthenol and D-panthenol (which is also known as dexpanthenol or provitamin B5). Dexpanthenol is the form of panthenol that our bodies can use.

Once inside our bodies, dexpanthenol is converted into vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid). This vitamin plays a key role in creating coenzyme A – a molecule needed for many important biochemical processes.

Dexpanthenol uses and benefits

As we’ve touched on already, dexpanthenol has moisturising properties and can offer a wide range of skincare benefits. For example, dexpanthenol can help to:

  • Hydrate your skin: When applied topically (onto the skin), dexpanthenol helps to attract and retain moisture in the skin, providing lasting hydration and supporting the skin’s protective barrier. This may be particularly beneficial if you or your baby have sensitive or dry skin.
  • Soften the skin and improve elasticity: Dexpanthenol’s moisturising-like properties can help to maintain the smoothness and elasticity of the skin.

Who should use dexpanthenol?

When applied topically (to your skin), dexpanthenol is suitable for a wide range of people and is often used in products designed to protect delicate skin.

For example, you’ll often see it used as a moisturiser or to help protect skin from the causes of nappy rash. It can also help with dry or rough skin.

If you have any of these, speak to your local pharmacist for their advice on using creams with dexpanthenol.

How to use dexpanthenol moisturiser

As mentioned, dexpanthenol is a key ingredient in a wide range of over-the-counter cosmetic and haircare products. However, one of its most popular uses is as a moisturiser.

To get the most out of your dexpanthenol moisturiser, be sure to follow the instructions on the packaging or as provided by your pharmacist or doctor. This typically involves:

  • Only ever using it on your skin
  • Keeping it away from your mouth, nose, ears and eyes
  • Cleaning the affected area of skin before each use and making sure it’s dry
  • Applying a thin layer onto the affected skin before gently rubbing it in

While dexpanthenol rarely causes any severe side effects, if you experience signs of an allergic reaction, like a rash, breathing difficulties or red, swollen, blistered or peeling skin, make sure to seek medical advice as soon as possible.
