Nappy rash is a frequent cutaneous pathology in newborn babies, who present, at least for a few days, an erythema of variable intensity on the perineum and/or buttocks. In most cases, nappy rash is minimal, it is moderate in 20% of cases and severe in less than 5%. There is usually a number of reasons for the nappy rash, e.g. prolonged contact with a mix of stools and urine, occlusion, friction due to nappies, etc.
Care usually given during these nappy rash episodes includes regular surveillance, correct hygiene and simple local care with the application of a cream or ointment. The use of topicals on newborns and especially premature babies requires particular care and the use of simple formulations. The use of perfumes, dyes, preservatives or any other kind of known allergenic substances should be avoided
